Pulse Sports highlights the big-name Kenyan footballers who are available for free following the conclusion of their contracts.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has been looking at various players as he searches for the best possible combinations to get Kenya to the top.

McCarthy is currently in Morocco where his team played out a goalless draw with Chad in a friendly match on Saturday with another one against the same opponent lined up on Tuesday.

The South African coach is assessing his players as he prepares for upcoming assignments and while he has lots of youngsters in Morocco, there are a number of experienced heads who he has relied on previously, and hopes to count on in the coming months, whose futures are up in the air.

This is because they are looking for new clubs after the conclusion of their contracts in the just-ended season.

Michael Olunga

The biggest name from the list is Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, who became a free agent after leaving Qatari side Al Duhail last month.

Olunga ended a hugely successful four-and-a-half-year stay at Al Duhail, leaving as the club’s all-time top scorer, but the Qatari giants opted against extending his stay and now, clubs are rushing against time to convince the lanky forward to join them.

Reports claim about four clubs have expressed an interest in Olunga, including Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds and United Arab Emirates’ Al Nasr SC.

Victor Wanyama

Victor Wanyama is yet to sign a new deal with Dunfermline Athletic.

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama was recently convinced to come out of international retirement by coach Benni McCarthy but he pulled out of the Chad friendlies to sort out some issues first.

It is not known if those issues are related to a new contract at Scottish second tier club Dunfermline Athletic, who had offered him a short-term deal until the end of last season.

Wanyama has expressed a desire to stay at the club but the two parties are yet to agree fresh terms which could open up a door for other suitors.

Masoud Juma

Harambee Stars striker Masoud Juma also became a free agent after leaving Iranian club Esteghlal upon the expiry of his contract.

Juma joined the nine-time Iranian champions last December on a six-month deal, and the club had an option to extend for a further year, but they opted against giving him a stay of execution, leaving the widely-travelled forward looking for a fifth club in just over two years.

Eric Johana

Forward Eric Johana is another one due to start looking for a new home as his contract with Romanian side ATA Urad is coming to an end this month.

ATA Urad took a chance on Johana in October 2023 after he had stayed for months without a club and with eight goals and 10 assists in 65 matches, it is not certain if that will be enough to earn him a contract extension.

Anthony Akumu

After ending his nightmare spell at Japanese side Sagan Tosu, midfielder Anthony ‘Teddy’ Akumu signed for Iranian side Kheybar FC in July 2024 on a one-year deal.

However, he managed just eight games, which came in his first two months at the club, and since October, he played only four minutes in what was a clear statement that he was surplus to requirements.

Johnstone Omurwa

Johnstone Omurwa is one of Kenya’s key centre-backs but he has struggled for game time at club level in the last two seasons.

Omurwa left Portuguese club Estrela Amadora in September 2024 after failing to get regular playing time and moved to Abha in the Saudi Arabian second division but his situation did not change.

In March 2025, he signed for Azerbaijan Premier League side Kapaz FC until the end of this season and after the conclusion of the campaign, he is back on the market again.

Ismael Gonzalez

Spain-born Kenyan midfielder Isamael Gonzalez is another journeyman on the list who is searching for a club yet again as his deal with Spanish third tier side Merida AD has come to an end.

Gonzalez joined the club in January this year as a free agent after leaving Aguilas in July 2024 and that move earned him a recall into the Harambee Stars squad in March.

The former Las Palmas youth product has played for a number of clubs in Spain, including Sabadell, Aguilas, Fuenlabrada, Cacereno, Granada B and Real Murcia.
