Manchester United might miss out on one of their main targets after Newcastle expressed an interest in a Brentford forward which could complicate matters for the Red Devils.

Manchester United’s delayed move for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo could become even more complicated following news that one of his team-mates is a target for Newcastle United.

United have been in discussion with Brentford over a move for Mbeumo since the start of June but the two sides are yet to reach an agreement as there remains a big distance over either side’s valuation of the player.

While Mbeumo has expressed a willingness to join United, that could all change following reports that Newcastle have turned attention to Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, who also impressed last season.

Newcastle had submitted a bid close to €80 million for French striker Hugo Ekitike but it was turned down by Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt, who are demanding more, while their pursuit of the 23-year-old has also been complicated by Liverpool entering the race.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle have now turned their attention to Wissa, who scored the most non-penalty goals in the Premier League last season, having netted 19, for Brentford.

However, his sale will depend on what happens to Mbeumo as Brentford will not want to lose both their forwards in the same transfer window when they have already seen head coach Thomas Frank and his coaching staff depart to Tottenham Hotspur while captain Christian Norgaard has moved to Arsenal.

It means United have to move with speed and complete the deal, which would make Wissa’s sale problematic, but if Newcastle act quickly, the Red Devils might find it hard to land one of their summer transfer targets after such a long negotiation process.

It remains to be seen what price Brentford will quote for Wissa, whose contract expires next summer, as they are asking close to £70 million for Mbeumo, which has led to the long drawn out saga with United.
