The famous football supporter was hacked to death at his rural home in January 2022 over a reported land dispute.

A 27-year-old man is awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of murdering ardent Kenyan football fan Isaac Juma.

Juma was hacked to death at his rural home in Mumias West, Kakamega County in January 2022 over what was reported to be a land dispute involving his family.

The football fanatic was alleged to have been killed by his relatives leading to the arrest and subsequent prosecution of 27-year-old Milton Namatsi.

According to the Standard, Justice William Musyoka, of the High Court in Kakamega, said in his ruling that the prosecution had proved its case against Namatsi beyond any reasonable doubt and the accused, who faces up to life in prison, would be given time to mitigate before sentencing.

“Five witnesses testified against the accused and their testimony is binding. Having considered that, you are found guilty of the offence of murder," the judge said, as quoted by the Standard.

He added: "I, therefore, order that the probation department gives a social evaluation report of his conduct before he is sentenced on September 25."

Police told the court that 58-year-old Juma was hit several times on the head and that he later died from excessive bleeding.

"The 58-year-old and his family had just eaten at his home. At some point that night, his children who were taking their supper outside the house, reported seeing silhouettes of human beings lurking near the fence," testified the investigation officer.

The officer added: “Moments later, they heard a commotion in the sheep’s pen. The sheep began bleating, prompting Juma and his 17-year-old son to dash outside to see what was happening.”

But before they could establish what was happening, a group of men armed with machetes attacked them, hacking Juma to death, the court heard.

Juma was an ardent supporter of AFC Leopards and Harambee Stars and would paint his body with different colours of the teams he was rooting for before heading to the stadium.

In the stands, Juma would be another source of entertainment with his cheeky dance moves and hardly missed a Leopards or national team game.

The supporter, who started following the teams in the late 80s, would also be carried along for Harambee Stars’ trips away with the last major tournament he attended being the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt where Kenya exited at the group stage.
