Lionel Messi has shared another side of Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham that will warm the hearts of the former England star’s fans.

Lionel Messi has revealed his surprise at how good his Inter Miami boss David Beckham still is as a footballer despite retiring in 2013.

Messi was lured by Beckham to the MLS club in 2023, adding stardust to the league, and has since been joined by his former Barcelona team-mates Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez.

However, Beckham still drops by and joins in training when he is in town and what Messi and his team-mates have witnessed has left them in awe.

“The truth is impressive - David is a spectacular person,” Messi said of the 49-year-old as quoted by The Sun.

“Although he doesn’t come around here often, when he’s in town he does drop by for a few days. But we’ve also kept in touch outside the club, and we’ve shared moments when he’s in Miami as well.”

Messi also revealed how he was taken aback by Beckham’s humility, something that has made their relationship even stronger.

“He is a very simple person, very humble, someone who comes across as very approachable, and the truth is that he is a great person,” he added.

“It is strange to see him on the other side of football and not as a player any more, beyond what he is today and what he represents for the club.

“But he still feels like a player because he comes here and goes out to the field. He wants to be close to the ball, in the training sessions and to be close to us.

“He tries that when he is here and the most important thing is the simplicity and the closeness he has. I did not know him and I did not expect anything, but I was surprised by his way of being.”

Messi has had a great impact in Miami since joining the club, scoring 42 goals in 49 matches, and helped the club to the Leagues Cup and the MLS Supporter’s Shield last season.
