Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy faces mounting pressure to secure maiden win after recent stalemate with Chad.

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy is walking a tightrope just three games into his tenure as growing frustrations among Kenyan football fans begin to simmer.

The South African tactician, appointed to steer Kenya toward a successful campaign at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is yet to secure a win, raising alarm bells across the nation’s passionate football community.

McCarthy's early outings in charge have seen the national team record a 2-1 loss to Gabon in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a 3-3 draw against Gambia, and most recently, a goalless stalemate against Chad in a friendly match played in Morocco.

While the initial results against Gabon, a higher-ranked opponent, did not trigger widespread concern, it is the barren draw against Chad, perceived as a weaker team, that has intensified scrutiny of the South African's leadership.

Sports analyst Zedekiah Otieno, a respected figure in Kenyan basketball and coach of the national U16 team, voiced what many fans are thinking during an appearance on Citizen TV.

"My take on Harambee Stars, I think Coach Benni is rebuilding, but I think Kenyans don't have the patience," Otieno stated candidly.

"We need to start getting wins. That is what can build our confidence as we head to CHAN."

McCarthy's Vision Is there

Otieno emphasized that while McCarthy’s effort to instill a possession-based approach is visible, the team remains blunt in attack.

"It's good you're possessing the ball. We're still weak on attack because we're not clinical in our finishing. I believe if we are able to do that—make sure that we convert our clear chances—then we should be setting ourselves up for better times in the coming matches," he said.

McCarthy’s short-term goal is to guide Kenya through the delayed 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to be hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania this August, yet with a continued lack of wins, impatience begin to stem.

“Remember, he has picked a draw (vs Gambia), a loss (vs Gabon), another draw (vs Chad)—to a low-ranking team,” Otieno remarked, underlining the gravity of McCarthy's current record.

McCarthy will have a chance to ease the tension and prove his critics wrong when Kenya face Chad again on June 10 in the return leg of their friendly double-header.

The match, set for Stade de Marrakech in Morocco, is being billed as a crucial opportunity for the Harambee Stars boss to earn his maiden win at the helm.
