Kenya Ramps Up Security Measures at Nyayo and Kasarani Ahead of CHAN 2024

CS Kipchumba Murkomen has provided security update ahead of Kenya co-hosting CHAN 2024.

With the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) less than three weeks away, Kenyan authorities have reiterated the country's readiness to host a safe and world-class tournament.

Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security, Kipchumba Murkomen, led a high-level government delegation on an inspection tour of Moi Sports Centre Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium, two of the key venues for the tournament.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya joined him in reviewing designated training grounds in Nairobi.

Murkomen Reaffirms Kenya's Commitment

Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security, Kipchumba Murkomen, led a high-level government delegation on an inspection tour of Moi Sports Centre Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium, two of the key venues for the tournament.

Murkomen emphasized Kenya's commitment to ensuring the safety of players, officials, and fans throughout the month-long competition, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from August 2 to 30.

“We want to assure Africa and the world that Kenya is fully prepared to host CHAN 2024 in a secure and welcoming environment,” Murkomen stated as quoted by CAF Online.

“Comprehensive security protocols are in place, from our airports to our stadiums, to ensure the tournament runs smoothly.”

The tour followed a recent inspection by a Confederation of African Football (CAF) delegation. According to Murkomen, all CAF-recommended adjustments have been implemented.

In a significant move to boost fan attendance and encourage travel within the continent, the government announced visa-free entry into Kenya for all African nationals during the tournament.

“We’ve inspected Nyayo, Kasarani, and the training facilities, and we are confident in our level of preparedness,” Murkomen added.

“Kenya is not only ready but determined to offer a memorable CHAN experience.”

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya echoed this sentiment, highlighting the review and optimization of contingency plans, access controls, and ticketing systems.

“As a government, we’ve left nothing to chance. CHAN 2024 is not just a football tournament—it’s a moment of national pride,” Mvurya remarked.

Harambee Stars Face Stern Test

The tournament kicks off on August 3 at Kasarani Stadium, with hosts Kenya's Harambee Stars facing two-time champions DR Congo in the Group A opener.

Later that day, Nyayo Stadium will host the match between former champions Morocco and Angola.

The final will be held on August 30 at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
