Kenya Police faced Kakamega Homeboyz in a closely contested league match with both teams showcasing strategic play and crucial saves.

Kenya Police stayed in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) title hunt with a 2-1 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz in a match played at Mumias Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Law Enforcers are now nine points behind Gor Mahia while Abana Abeingo remain sixth on the log with six matches remaining until the end of the season.

The game got off to a slow start, as Kakamega Homeboyz looked to build momentum with passes that were not turning Police over.

The Abana Abeingo initiated the first spark in the game on 20 minutes after Kevin Amwayi fired a volley unmarked just outside the box wide.

Police only came to life on the half-hour mark after Tito Okello had a big chance with a free header that was saved by Ugandan shot-stopper James Ssetuba.

The visitors dropped deep in their own half in the closing phase of the first stanza as Homeboyz looked for ways to break them down but their attacks lacked urgency, with long balls into the box gathered by Patrick Matasi and their ball circulation not carving out chances.

Kevin Amwayi was awarded for his determination as he found the hosts opening goal. The veteran striker popped up to the net the game's first goal after an assist came in from Glen Otunga.

The match went into the interval with Kakamega Homeboyz leading Kenya Police by 1-0.

The sides cancelled each other out in midfield after the break, and Salim Babu made a defensive and tactical change just after the restart by bringing David Owino off the bench to replace Braian Okoth.

The game opened up after that as Salim Odeka had a chance for Homeboyz with a header in the box that was smothered by Matasi after a cross by Brian Chala.

Police also stretched themselves going forward and their efforts were rewarded at hour mark with a great finish from South Sudan international Tito Okello.

Abana Abeingo were threatening to get the winner in the dying minutes and were awarded an indirect free-kick for a foul in the six-yard box.

Mose Shumah hit the side netting for the hosts with a looping shot from that situation and Oliver Majak latched onto a rebound but his close-range header was acrobatically kept out by Matasi.

The former Tusker goalkeeper was asked to make a superb double save five minutes from time to keep out both Otieno and Amwayi with Abana Abeingo still fighting for a winner.

But instead it was Marvin Nambwire who was to Kenya Police's plight when he scored in added time
