Homeboyz had proven to be Kariobangi Sharks’ bogey team, even smashing them 6-1 the last time both sides met.

Kariobangi Sharks head coach William Muluya has expressed satisfaction at finally being able to get one over Kakamega Homeboyz as Julius Masaba netted a last-gasp goal from a counterattack to give them a much-needed three points.

The game was very even, with both sides struggling to test each other significantly in the opening half, before Masaba’s goal in the very last minute of stoppage time gave them the crucial win, finally getting one over Homeboyz, who tore them aside last season.

The Harambee Stars assistant coach has revealed he is proud of his charges for following his instructions to the letter.

“We wanted to try and get a win. Homeboyz have been beating us and getting points easily against us especially here in Nairobi,” Muluya said.

“They are a team that are disciplined and well organized, especially in their backline. For Masaba to give us a point in the dying minutes of the match, was something particularly pleasing and important for us. We wanted as much as possible to hit the 10-plus point mark with a win.”

In the last two meetings between both sides, Sharks were beaten 3-1 and then 6-1 in the space of two weeks, but Muluya is relieved to finally get one over his counterpart Patrick Odhiambo.

“The last time we played Homeboyz, they beat us 6-1 in the cup match, so it is a game where when you approach it, you have to ensure that mistakes are very minimal.

“The boys paid keen attention to the instructions they were given and did their due diligence, so I am very pleased.”

Sharks will play AFC Leopards in their ninth game of the season, hoping to keep plugging away in the quest to get close to the summit. They currently sit fifth on 12 points.
