After leaving Benfica for Real Madrid 13 years ago, Angel Di Maria is set to return to the Portuguese club on a free transfer.

Di Maria played 121 times for Benfica, assisting them in winning the league and two domestic cups before joining Real Madrid in 2010.

The World Cup winner helped win several trophies for Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid before moving to another destination.

After just one Serie A season at Juventus, the World Cup winner has now made the decision to quit the club and sign with Benfica on a free transfer.

The winger's decision to leave Juventus after just one season was made last month and several clubs were eager to sign him.

According to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Benfica have won the race to sign Di Maria and the World Cup winner will sign a one-year contract to return to Lisbon and the negotiations have reached their final stage.

Fabrizio said, “Ángel Di Maria and his return to Benfica, a matter of days. Time to prepare all the documents, check final details and then sign the contract as revealed yesterday.”

“Di Maria only wanted to return and it’s now just a matter of time. The contract will be until June 2024.”

The Argentine is on the verge of completing his move from Juventus to Benfica on a free transfer.

Di Maria’s career

Di Maria, then 19 years old, initially joined Benfica from Rosario Central in 2007 and then moved to Real Madrid in 2010.

The adaptable star continued to win awards in Madrid, including Real's unprecedented tenth Champions League title in 2014.

After that, he joined Manchester United, but he could only stay there for a year after so many bad remarks and complaints from him.

He then moved to PSG where he spent seven glittering years. He was signed by Juventus in 2022, and despite a turbulent season that saw them finish seventh after being docked ten points, he only started 15 Serie A games.
