Kenya international Joseph Okumu's team, Stade de Reims, mutually parts ways with their head coach.

Joseph Okumu's head coach at French Ligue 1 side's Stade de Reims Will Still has parted ways with the club effective immediately with only three games remaining in the league season.

The mutual decision followed a significant meeting with club president Jean-Pierre Caillot, marking an abrupt end to Still's tenure.

According to AP News, the club stated on Thursday that "in light of this decision, and to enable Stade de Reims to prepare for the upcoming season, Will Still and his assistant Nicolas Still will relinquish their respective roles effective immediately."

This move comes as Reims sits 11th in the league, trailing the newly crowned champions Paris Saint-Germain by 30 points.

Will Still, an Anglo-Belgian, first caught the public's eye last season after he successfully pulled Reims out of relegation peril following the departure of Oscar Garcia.

Under his leadership, Reims developed a blend of attacking prowess and defensive resilience.

Reflecting on his achievements, Still remarked, "Last season’s 19-match unbeaten run and the spectacular matches at Delaune will remain unique moments for me. Delaune and Champagne will always have a special place in my life, and I’ll always be the No. 1 supporter of the Rouge et Blanc."

Starting his career as a video analyst before moving on to assistant coaching roles, Still became the youngest head coach in the history of the Belgian league at just 28 when he took over at Beerschot.

Although he was not retained after a ninth-place finish, his career trajectory took a significant turn during his second stint in Champagne, which he describes as a "fairy tale."

Club president Jean-Pierre Caillot expressed his appreciation for Still's contributions, stating, "We are proud to have been able to contribute to the emergence of a coach who has been able to impose his convictions and his playing identity."

After joining Reims initially as an assistant to Oscar Garcia in 2021, Still briefly departed for Standard Liege but returned to take the reins at Reims following Garcia's dismissal in October 2022.

Despite his successes, including an 11th-place finish in Ligue 1 and extending an unbeaten run to 17 league matches last season, Still faced challenges due to not holding a UEFA Pro License, resulting in the club incurring a £22,000 (Ksh 3,716,000) fine each time he managed a game.

This season, Reims has maintained a mid-table position, and with the current 11th-place standing and three matches left, the club is keen to reorient for future challenges.

In a surprising revelation last February, the Belgian-born coach who was raised by English parents shared his lifelong support for West Ham United and his aspirations to someday manage the team.

The search for Still's successor is reportedly underway as Reims aims to build on the solid foundation laid during his tenure.
