President William Ruto was among those in attendance as AFC Leopards ended their 12-day 60th birthday celebrations by defeating visiting Spanish fourth tier side AE Ramassa.

AFC Leopards completed its 12-day 60th anniversary celebrations with a 2-1 victory over Spanish fourth tier side AE Ramassa.

In a match that involved former AFC Leopards players feature, with President William Ruto among those watching at Nyayo National Stadium, the Spanish side took an early lead before Michael Khamati levelled matters for a 1-1 draw at the break.

Former Ingwe midfielder Charles Okwemba then made 2-1 in the second half as Leopards run out 2-1 winners to complete their birthday celebrations with victory.

That came after select Leopards sides from the current squad had drawn 1-1 with both Shabana and Gor Mahia.

Brian Yakhama broke the deadlock against K’Ogalo but Austin Odhiambo ensured a share of the spoils later as the friendly ‘Mashemeji derby’ ended level.

Against Shabana, Kevin Kimani’s first half penalty was cancelled out by Japhet Lihanda six minutes into the second half and both sides held on for the draw.

The contest had been preceded by a legends’ match involving Leopards and Gor Mahia legends which ended 1-0 in favour of the Ingwe old boys while a women’s match between Leopards Ladies and Kisii Ladies ended 1-1.

Besides football, plenty of entertainment was on show for the fans who attended the event as Leopards ensured their 60th birthday was a memorable one.

President Ruto graced the celebrations which was attended by a number of leaders especially Western Kenya governors as well as their Nairobi counterpart Johnson Sakaja.

Leopards’ anniversary celebrations started on March 12, the date the club was founded in 1964, with visits to children’s homes and tree planting among some of the CSR activities conducted, while there have been promises aimed at turning around the club’s fortunes from its leaders.

Fans will now be waiting to see if the promises will be turned into action after six decades of empty words.
