Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has declared his allegiance if Kenya and his beloved South Africa's Bafana Bafana encounter each other.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has shed light on how a potential encounter between Kenya and South Africa's Bafana Bafana would play out.

The South African football legend, with a deep history with Bafana Bafana, has declared his allegiance to the Kenyan national football team.

McCarthy, who is Bafana Bafana's all-time top scorer, has reiterated that his loyalties would lie with Kenya in a scenario where his home country clashes with Harambee Stars.

In an interview with the BBC, he proceeded to highlight why, despite his storied history with Bafana Bafana, he would opt for Harambee Stars.

"Yeah, my heart might be with Bafana, but if we ever get to meet each other and I'm on the touchline in the Kenya national team, then Bafana don't exist," said the ex-South African international.

McCarthy's precarious position, while yet to manifest, is plausible either in a friendly fixture, on the continental stage with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), or in the World Cup qualifiers.

This year's showpieces are, however, out of the question, with Kenya struggling in their World Cup qualifiers group, having already missed out on 2025 AFCON qualification.

South Africa, on the other hand, are poised for action in the continental showpiece in December and are well on track for another World Cup finals appearance, currently topping their qualification group.

McCarthy, who went to two World Cup finals with South Africa in 1998 and 2002, has expressed a desire to replicate that feat with the Harambee Stars.

"I know firsthand what it was like playing and participating in the World Cup. It's one of the most special feelings in the world. And I want to give them that. I think Kenya has what it takes, and I think they just kind of got a little bit the upper hand because they got someone who's an exceptional serial winner. I hate losing, and I hope my players will be ready for that," said McCarthy.

Those hopes will, however, have to be shelved with McCarthy's Harambee Stars struggling in their qualification group.

A 3-3 draw and a 2-1 loss against Gambia and Gabon respectively during the March international break left the side with their World Cup hopes up in smoke.

McCarthy and his charges will navigate the remainder of the qualifiers with their World Cup dream gone as they eye the African Nations Championship in August, poised to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
