South Africa fans want Benni McCarthy to assume the coaching role that will be made available in the summer.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy is barely three months into his role with the national team but is already being linked with a return to his native South Africa.

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro will savor ties with the club at the end of the season and works have already begun regarding finding his replacement as the Premiership Super League season enters the homestretch.

The Spaniard is keen to lift the Premiership title and fans are worried that his exit could result into prolonged search for his successor. However, one name that has been mentioned is Benni McCarthy.

The 47-year-old former Manchester United assistant coach was confirmed as Harambee Stars coach on March 3, signing a contract that runs through to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

McCarthy who is regarded as South Africa's all-time best player, has the league experience both as coach and player and fans think he is the right profile to fill in Jose Riveiro's shoes.

McCarthy is a hero back home because of his unmatched achievements for Bafana Bafana where he remains their all time top scorer with 31 goals from 71 matches.

The forward also netted South Africa’s first-ever World Cup goal in a 1-1 draw over Denmark in 1998.

Another fan opined that only Benni McCarthy and Pitso Mosimane are perfect fit for the job. "Only Pitso and Benni look genuine... The rest can go and coach a circus team!!" Pius Mashaba noted.

A third supporter, Malibongwe Mshengu chimed: "Pirates have their own way of team management. Benni and Rhulani are good but short-tempered. Pitso always comes with his team, so I don't see him joining Bucs"

It is unthinkable of the South African to return to his native as soon as possible because of the contractual obligations with Harambee Stars.

He has already overseen two World Cup qualifier matches and fans and stakeholders alike love his bold attacking brand of football never seen for a while with the national team. 

McCarthy is already planning for the upcoming international break having injected fresh blood into the Harambee Stars set up.
