Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Begins 2025 With Win as Shericka Jackson, Sha’Carri Richardson Await Battles Ahead
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce opens her 2025 season with a confident win, signaling readiness for upcoming showdowns with sprint rivals.
He pointed out that the national team and local leagues are becoming better in terms of structuring and finance, something he is happy about, but still challenged the players to try Europe.
“We have enough talent to play in Europe, and you know, Europe is easy to crack, but no South African players tend to go there, it’s a shame. Understand the league is fast improving and the financial stand is also good, which I’m all for it,” Benni McCarthy said.
“However, I think if you want to be among the best and if you want South Africa to elevate like we did in the past, it is to go and play against the likes of Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, Barcelona and Man City. That’s where we want to see South African players.”

He pointed out that many young players are emerging from South Africa, and he is glad to witness that at this point.
Benni McCarthy encouraged the youngsters to keep showing up and maximise the media coverage to get the exposure needed.
“I’ve been watching very closely, and I’m very excited about the young players. I just hope that they don’t become one-hit wonders,” Benni McCarthy said.
“I just want them to continue that way because they are getting good exposure, good media coverage as well, and they are becoming fans' favourites.
“They are important figures in their clubs at such a young age, so I hope that they can maintain that consistency and elevate themselves.”
Benni McCarthy’s reflections serve as a wake-up call to South African footballers and stakeholders, urging them to embrace global opportunities, and push beyond comfort zones to restore the country's place among the football elite.
