Sports CS Salim Mvurya has revealed when Nyayo Stadium will be handed over ahead of CHAN 2024, with the tournament now just four weeks away.

With just four weeks to go until the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), the government has confirmed that Nyayo Stadium is nearly ready and will be handed over in the coming days, with only minor works remaining.

Speaking during an inspection tour at Kasarani Stadium on Monday, which was officially handed over to the CHAN Local Organising Committee, Sports CS, Salim Mvurya, affirmed that all essential upgrades within the stadium have been completed, including the playing surface and key infrastructure.

“The field is ready. The pitch is in place, and everything else you’ve seen here has been completed,” said Mvurya.

“We had a final recommendation for the perimeter wall, which is going to be completed in two days.”

Police Sacco Stadium Ready

Kenya, who are hosting the upcoming tournament alongside Tanzania and Uganda, was expected to also provide four training facilities. Kenya namechecked Ulinzi Sports Complex, Police Sacco Stadium, Kasarani Annex and Kirigiti Stadium

Only Ulinzi Sports Complex was cleared by CAF. It is unlikely that Kirigiti Stadium will be used, but there is hope that Police Sacco Stadium will be ready, which Mvurya provided an update on.

“I was there (Police Sacco Stadium)  last week—everything else is done. We have advised them to enhance the parking, and that’s now being finalized.”

The installation of tartan tracks will proceed concurrently but will not interfere with CHAN preparations.

“It’s not part of CHAN preparations, but it’s a process we had already begun. It should be completed before the first match,” he noted.

Stop Vandalising Public Facilities - Mvurya

The CS also expressed concern over recent vandalism incidents at public facilities amid the heights of the Gen Z protests , warning that such acts undermine national investments.

“We use public funds when renovating infrastructure. It is unfortunate that the same public goes ahead to destroy public facilities,” Mvurya said.

“Even as a democratic country, we must protect both public and private property. That incident was very unfortunate, and that’s why we’ve enhanced the wall.”

To tighten security, more CCTV cameras are being installed across the facility. The perimeter wall is also nearing completion, while turnstyles are also being added to help with crowd control at Nyayo Stadium.

“In the next two days, some of those areas will be covered, and we’ll install additional CCTV cameras to help identify and arrest those responsible,” he added.

Nyayo Stadium is one of the key venues expected to host CHAN 2024 matches, and the government has reiterated its commitment to delivering it on time.
