The regional football governing body took the decision on Thursday afternoon.

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) has taken the decision to postpone the U-18 Women's Championship by three weeks.

The development was confirmed on Thursday after a meeting between CECAFA Executive Committee and the hosts' Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

In a statement released by the regional football governing body, the tournament slated to take place in Nairobi will start on June 24th, moving from the initial kickoff date of June 3rd.

"The event which was scheduled to start on June 3rd will now take place between June 24th to July 8th, 2023 in the Kenyan capital," confirmed the statement.

CECAFA Executive Director Auka Gacheo said the change was necessary to allow the participating nations time to fine-tune their squads.

"We are confident that pushing the start of the Championship forward will give Member Associations enough time to prepare their teams for the season opening tournament on the CECAFA calendar," said Gecheo.

Kenya, who last hosted a CECAFA tournament in 2021, also won the bid to host the 2023 CECAFA U-18 Boys Championship slated for November 25th to December 9th.

The nation hosted CAF Women's CAF Champions League qualifiers, where eight teams took part in the event, which faced delays because of logistical challenges experienced by the regional body.

Uganda will host the CECAFA U-15 Boys Championship and the CAF Women's Champions League Zonal qualifiers. Rwanda accepted to host the Pan African Schools Championship.
