Bandari custodian Joseph Ochuka has revealed he is “ready” to make the step up between the sticks for Harambee Stars should he impress enough to earn playing time against Seychelles and Gabon later this month.

Ochuka was named in the final Harambee Stars squad for the two World Cup qualifiers against Gabon and Seychelles, and will be competing for the starting berth alongside Patrick Matasi of Kenya Police and Zesco’s Ian Otieno.

Speaking to Pulse Sports right before the team jetted off to Gabon on Wednesday morning, Ochuka was grateful to have earned recognition from the national team thanks to his “hard work” in Mombasa which he says has borne fruit.

“I thank God because through the hard work we have been doing in Mombasa, I earned the call up,” Ochuka said.

“When you get called up, you congratulate yourself and get motivated and it is good. We will pray to God and continue dwelling upon him in order to do well.”

Ochuka has expressed confidence at the mood in the camp, and challenged his teammates to move together as a unit and follow the coach’s instructions if they are to achieve good results for the duration of camp.

“We can make it in those two games if we put a proper shift in and people remain focused while following the coach’s instructions, I think it will be easy. Nothing is impossible.”

Ochuka has revealed that being in camp alongside Matasi and Otieno is helping him learn something new every day.

“There are big players with experience. I am going to learn something from them because I am sure they will also learn something from me and if a chance comes, I will be ready.”

Kenya has been placed in group F of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Burundi, Ivory Coast and The Gambia are the other teams in the group.

A good start for Harambee Stars will give them all the confidence they need to try and make history moving forward.

Meanwhile, the long-standing Bandari custodian has revealed that his club aim to lay their hands on something come the end of the season, but it will all come down to commitment and sheer hard work.

“We will continue working hard. Our ambition for the season was to get something this year because it has been a long time since we won something. It will be good.

“We will continue pushing ourselves and see where God will place us come the end of the season.”
