AFC Leopards goalkeeper, Levis Opiyo, warmly farewells ex-captain, Eugene Mukangula, as he makes his anticipated move to Shabana.

AFC Leopards goalkeeper Levis Opiyo has paid an emotional tribute to ex-teammate and former club captain, Eugene Mukangula, following his move to Shabana FC.

This transfer comes a few days before the closure of the 2023/2024  Football Federation Premier League season's transfer window.

Mukangula, having led the Leopards as captain from March to June 2023, experienced the highs and lows of football captaincy.

His leadership came under scrutiny when he and his assistant Peter Thiong'o were alleged to have lacked initiative during a pivotal clash against Vihiga Bullets, a game that eventually saw tensions rise between the playing squad and the management team.

Despite the off-pitch turmoil, it is  the memories on the pitch that Opiyo chose to focus on.

“All the best, Kabuda. You will always be a captain to me. I will cherish the wonderful moments we had both at Thika United and at the Den. Cheers,”  Opiyo wrote on his social media pages, emphasizing the bond the two shared from their earlier days at Thika United before moving to AFC Leopards.

Mukangula's football journey has been nothing short of transformative. Joining AFC in 2018 from Thika United, he started off as a promising striker. Yet, as the seasons progressed and under the tactical eyes of different managers, Mukangula found himself evolving into a midfielder.

With the grace of a first touch that would leave defenders second-guessing and the ability to send killer passes slicing through defensive lines, Mukangula made sure his presence was always felt.

His prowess was particularly noted when former coach, Patrick Aussems, seeing the latent talent in Mukangula, repositioned him from a defensive midfielder to an attacking one.

The shift was evidently successful as the midfielder often dazzled fans with his on-pitch magic and one could argue that everything he touched turned into football gold.
