FKF regrets the decision, pledges continued support for youth development.

The Kenya national girls’ Under 18s side, Junior Harambee Starlets,  have been forced to break camp prematurely for the CECAFA U18 tournament.

Originally slated to begin on June 24th, the tournament faced logistical challenges by CECAFA, leading to a five-day postponement and ultimately the cancellation of the Junior Starlets' camp.

In a statement, the Football Kenya Federation expressed their remorse for announcing the calling off of the Junior Starlets Camp, which was intended to prepare the talented young footballers for the CECAFA U18 tournament.

“Football Kenya Federation deeply regrets announcing the calling off  the Junior Starlets Camp, which was intended to prepare our talented young footballers for the CECAFA U18 tournament. This decision has been made due to the prevailing uncertainty surrounding the tournaments’ scheduling,” the statement reads.

“FKF has always prioritized the development and growth of our young footballers, and the Junior Starlets team was an essential part of our commitment to nurturing talent and providing opportunities for our youth. The Federation acknowledges the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices made by the players and coaching staff throughout the preparation period.

The statement adds: “The team, which has been in camp at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, since June 8, 2023, held their last training session today with a friendly match against Mathare United Women. The players and the technical staff will be released from camp on Friday, June 30, 2023.

“FKF wishes to extend its gratitude to the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Arts and Sports, and the Ministry of Education for their commitment and efforts granted towards the team as it prepared for the tournament.”

The draw  for the tournament was to be conducted last week with four teams placed in one of the groups and three others in the second group.

Kenya’s Junior Starlets, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and Zanzibar were to take part in the Championship.
