Mathare dropped into the relegation zone after a heavy defeat to City Stars on Wednesday.

Mathare United legend Innocent Mutiso has challenged the Slum Boys to show their spirit as they look to survive in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL).

The 2008 league champions currently sit 16th on the league standings after suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Nairobi City Stars at Kasarani Annex.

The loss was not well received by Mutiso, who urged them to recover quickly and start posting positive results and avoid the axe at the end of the season.

"My Mathare United you have to win against teams in and around you if you're to fight relegation.

You have to admire what K'Ogalo has done even with the then transfer ban hovering like a cloud the past two seasons," Mutiso tweeted.

The former Harambee Stars winger played for Mathare United for four years and was part of the club that won the 2008 league title.

He also played for Gor Mahia, briefly under coaches Zdravko Logarusic and Frank Ouna before Bobby Williamson came in and led the team to a first league title in 18 years.

Mathare United recently landed a shirt sponsor in the name of Oye, which is expected to change the fortunes of the club.

The sponsor is a financial technology company that is reportedly owned by Kevin Mutiso, who happens to be a club's longtime fan.

Due to the financial support, Mathare made 11 new signings in the recently concluded mid-season transfer window.

Four new players, Elijah Mwanzia, John Kuol, Baron Okech, and Norman Ogolla, debuted in a match against City Stars on Wednesday.

The Slum Boys' next league game will be against FC Talanta at Kasarani Annex Stadium on April 6.
