FKFPL Battle of wills as KCB face Gor Mahia in a thrilling top of table clash

Victory for K'Ogalo will see them eight points clear while the bankers stand to move within two point of the leaders.

FKF Premier League leaders Gor Mahia have the chance to create a greater buffer between them and the chasing pack when they face second-placed KCB in a top-of-table clash at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday evening.

Gor Mahia are currently on top of the table with 41 points from 19 matches, while KCB are second with 36 points from the same number of matches.

The reverse fixture in the first round ended 1–0 in favour of KCB thus Gor Mahia will be seeking revenge in the much awaited top of the table clash.

Gor Mahia will be pinning their hopes on in-form striker Benson Omala who is currently on top of scoring charts with 19 goals. The former KCB transfer target has become a problem for FKPL goalkeepers.

Gor Mahia coach Jonathan McKinstry expects a testy clash against KCB who have shown their intent of being a strong team that is capable of dethroning K’Ogalo from top of the table.

“We have a lean squad in the league but we have always fought on the pitch. Any team playing Gor Mahia gives its best and since they defeated us in the first leg, we have to keep our focus and turn the tables on them,” said McKinstry.

Last weekend, KCB fell 2-1 to Kariobangi Sharks, and three points dropped could have reduced their gap with Gor Mahia to just two points which could have given them an easy path to the match to the top of the table.

KCB assistant coach Godfrey Oduor is wary of a revenge-seeking Gor Mahia side, but he made it clear that they will fight for a positive result against K’Ogalo in the top-of-the-table clash.

“Facing Gor Mahia is always tough, but we take it as any other game where we are aiming to win. Even though our form has been down, that is football and we are working to rectify the weak areas,” said Oduor.

In head-to-head stats, Gor Mahia and KCB in the previous six matches in the top flight league, each team has won twice, while the two other ties have ended in draws.

The outcome of this top-of-the-table clash could further alter the standings as the league heads into a break.
