Winnie Chebet has opened up on plans to shift to road running if her plans don't work out this season.

2022 Africa 1500m champion Winnie Chebet has expressed interest in switching to road races come next year.

Speaking during a post-race interview at the third Athletics Kenya weekend meet, Chebet noted that if things don’t work out as planned this season, she will certainly make the bold move next season.

“If my plans this year don’t work out…I already have a strategy and my focus has been on road racing. By next year, I might not compete on the track but my focus might be on the road races solely,” Chebet said.

During the weekend meet, Chebet competed in the 1500m and won the race but did not hit the qualifying time for the All-African Games in Accra, Ghana. The continental showpiece is scheduled for Friday, March 8 to Saturday, March 23.

She clocked 4:15.10 to cross the finish line ahead of Mary Nyaboke and Daisilah Cherono who clocked 4:16.00 and 4:17.27 respectively.

Chebet was elated to have won the race despite not achieving the qualifying time and noted that she will continue working around the clock to achieve her targets.

“I have worked hard and I thank God for giving me the strength to run here. However, I’m yet to hit the qualifying time for the All-African Games but I believe that going forward, I will manage.

“My first target this season is to make the cut to the All-African Games team and then later the Olympic Games,” Chebet said.
