Edna Awuor is seeking recognition for her son with late marathoner Kelvin Kiptum after a court denied her request for a DNA test.

Edna Awuor, the woman claiming to have a child with the late world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum, has announced her next steps following a court's decision to decline her request for a DNA test.

Despite the setback, Awuor remains determined to establish paternity for her child and seeks to engage directly with Kiptum's family.

On February 23, Awuor, through her attorney Joseph Ayaro, had approached the High Court in Eldoret with a plea to extract DNA samples from Kiptum's body for paternity testing.

The request was directed towards establishing the fatherhood of Awuor's one-year-old and seven-month-old son, purportedly fathered by Kiptum.

Justice Wananda, presiding over the case, cited the public interest surrounding Kiptum's burial and suggested alternative legal avenues for Awuor to prove paternity, subsequently denying the application.

Awuor, undeterred by the judicial system's decision, has expressed her intention to open dialogue with Kiptum's family.

"We started living together in 2019. Kelvin was present at the hospital when our son was born, and he even named him Andrian Cherop Kiptum," she said in an interview with Tuko.

Awuor's quest for legal acknowledgment of her son's paternity stems from a desire to quell public speculation and ensure the child's rightful place within Kiptum's lineage.

"I went to court so that we could have a DNA test and stop the public from asking questions, but the court said I went too late. I now want to have discussions with Kiptum's family so that the child can get recognized by the family," she explained.

Awuor's situation is further complicated by her connections with Kiptum's widow, Asenath Rotich, with whom she has maintained communication.

Even during times when Kiptum was unreachable, Awuor and Rotich shared chats, a detail that underscores the complex web of relationships surrounding the case.
