Gout Gout rose to global prominence after shattering Usain Bolt's U-20 200m record last December,
Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout has opened up on how the pressure of being dubbed the next Usain Bolt is putting him under pressure to set the bar high for the rest of his country men.
At just 17 years old, Gout is rewriting the record books and sparking comparisons with some of the greatest figures in Australian sprinting history.
His standout achievements at the 2024 Australian All Schools Athletics Championships in Queensland have propelled him into the spotlight, making him a name to watch as he continues his meteoric rise in the sport.
Patrick Johnson remains the only Australian to run a sub-10-second 100m, set the national record of 9.93 seconds in 2003. Johnson’s achievement has stood as a testament to his talent and remains an aspirational benchmark for Australian sprinters.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy reveals why Mohammed Bajaber is his kind of player
Mohammed Bajaber has earned praise from Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy who has revealed how he left an impression on him during their recent conversations.
Gout Gout believes he has what it takes to carry the burden of a whole country and continent (Australia & Oceania) on his shoulders.
"Yeah, I definitely think about that. For me, I’ve got to set the bar extremely high for the rest of Australia. Because if I can set it that high, it can inspire the rest of the country—show them that someone like me can actually do it.
“And maybe one day, someone else from Australia can reach that level too and set the table just like I did.
I think being me and showing the world that I can set the bar at the highest possible limit—that’s how I can show Australia that anyone, just like them, can do it too. Breaking these records means something bigger than just me."

Gout Gout’s performances have already begun to echo those of these greats. His wind-assisted 10.04 seconds in the 100m heats at the All Schools Championships is the fourth-fastest time in history for an under-18 athlete.
Although the tailwind made the time ineligible for official records, his 10.17 seconds in the final was a legitimate and sensational effort. This performance places him sixth on the all-time list for under-18 athletes, with the tantalizing prospect of breaking Johnson’s record in the near future.
Even more impressive was Gout’s record-breaking 200m run. Clocking a wind-legal 20.04 seconds, he shattered Peter Norman’s long-standing Australian record.
By breaking barriers and records, Gout is not only contributing to the evolution of Australian sprinting but also inspiring a new generation to pursue their dreams with determination and confidence.
