Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo has explained why he withdrew from the World Athletics Relays.

Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo has broken his silence after withdrawing from Botswana’s team to the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China.

Letsile Tebogo had been selected alongside a formidable team to the global event, but he withdrew from the event last minute.

The world 100m silver medallist has since shared a detailed analysis of what led to his decision to withdraw from the event, noting that it was for the good of himself and that of the federation.

The world 200m bronze medallist revealed that he did not wake up and make the decision, and tried to avoid that at all costs, but nothing could be done.

Letsile Tebogo revealed that the decision to withdraw was the best in terms of accommodating his long-term goals, which include going one place better at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

“I wish to clarify that my withdrawal was not a decision taken lightly, nor without due consideration and engagement with relevant stakeholders,” Letsile Tebogo revealed in a post of his Facebook page.

“As stated, a personal decision was made in the best interest of all parties involved, and in full alignment with my long-term goals as a professional athlete. I remain fully committed to my country, the team, and the advancement of athletics in Botswana.”

Letsile Tebogo also apologised to the fans and stakeholders for any disappointments or inconveniences caused.

He urged the fans to rally behind the team that will be in action this weekend, as he also extended a hand of gratitude to the fans who have always been behind him despite the few setbacks encountered.

“To my fans and stakeholders, I sincerely apologise for missing the opportunity to compete at the World Relays. Your unwavering support means the world to me, and I am deeply grateful for your understanding. Be assured that my schedule for the season remains unchanged. Thank You!” Tebogo concluded the statement.

In choosing to step back from the World Athletics Relays, Letsile Tebogo has shown maturity and foresight, prioritising his long-term athletic goals while reaffirming his loyalty to Botswana and the sport.
