Letsile Tebogo has revealed what he will work on to make ammends for his poor seventh place finish at the Xiamen Diamond League on Saturday.

Letsile Tebogo has revealed what he will work on to better his disappointing 100m performance at the Xiamen Diamond League classic last Saturday.

South Africa’s Akani Simbine added another major win to his growing collection, taking victory in the men’s 100m at Egret Stadium with a time of 9.99 seconds.

He beat out a strong field that included Tebogo and former world champion Christian Coleman. Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala finished second in 10.13, while Great Britain’s Jeremiah Azu rounded out the podium in 10.17.

Tebogo, meanwhile, had to settle for seventh place in the 10-man field, clocking 10.20 seconds. After the race, the 21-year-old spoke candidly about the challenges he faced, pointing in particular to the effects of long travel.

"I mean, I'm excited — good, long travels and everything — but I hate how I performed today. I didn’t see the times, but I believe it’s a great season opener for us, and I'm looking forward to the next one," Tebogo said.

Looking ahead, the Botswanan sprint star explained that he won't be diving back into full training just yet, but will be focusing on correcting key issues he identified during the race.

"For the weeks ahead, I'm just going to go back — not really for full training, just to correct a few things that I noticed during the race that are really, really missing. I believe the next one will be even more amazing and it will be great."

"Both technically and in a few aspects of training also. But with training, since it’s going to be a short week, it won’t be as much. I believe the technical side is where I really need to focus."

Tebogo won’t have long to wait for his next opportunity. The Olympic 200m gold medalist is set to return to action at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Shanghai/Keqiao on May 3, where he’ll contest another high-profile 100m race.

The young sprint sensation has already built an impressive resume. In recent years, he won back-to-back world U20 titles over 100m in 2021 and 2022, before making history at the Paris Olympics last summer by claiming the 200m gold in an African record of 19.46.

He also set a national record of 9.86 in the 100m final, where he placed sixth, and anchored Botswana to a silver medal in the 4x400m with a remarkable 43.04-second split.

In 2022, Tebogo shattered the world U20 100m record by clocking 9.91 in Cali, Colombia. A year later, in his first full senior season, he won two medals at the World Championships in Budapest — silver in the 100m (9.88) and bronze in the 200m (19.81).

His breakout performances in 2024, including a 4x400m gold at the World Relays, earned him Male Athlete of the Year and Male Track Athlete of the Year honors at the World Athletics Awards.
