Dutch legend Sifan Hassan is in Kenya for her London Marathon training but not everything has impressed her so far during her stay in East Africa.
Olympics marathon champion Sifan Hassan is known for her knack for taking on challenging situations that have made her resilient and one of the greatest distance runners of all-time.
Staying true to this, the Dutch legend decided that her London Marathon preparations this year will take place in Kenya and she has been busy in training in Iten, Elegeyo Marakwet County.
However, as she continues with her preparations, she is having to deal with different challenges that are making her life difficult in East Africa.
“Preparations for @LondonMarathon in Kenya this time. Love the environment and the people, do not like the crazy elevation,” Hassan posted on X, pointing out the challenging terrain she has to navigate in training.

Hassan’s coach this week commented on why the 2023 London Marathon champion opted to shift her training to Kenya, explaining the need to try out different things every year to avoid boring routines.
“We take a lot of risks in like the type of races we choose and the different types of training we try every year is completely different,” coach Tim Rowberry told Dutch outlet NOS.

“So, I think that makes it so much more rewarding than if we were just doing the same thing every year or just repeating the same training, in the same place. It’s always exciting and nerve-wracking too but I think the more nervous you get, the greater the reward is at the end.”
Hassan is seeking to repeat her 2023 heroics in London, when she won the race against all odds, having fallen down before she got up and caught up with her rivals and still beat them, in what was her full marathon debut.
Since then, she has won the Chicago Marathon (2023) and Olympics marathon gold in Paris last year, when she also claimed bronze in both 10,000m and 5,000m all achieved within days in the French capital.
In London on April 27, Hassan will be up against a strong cast that includes defending champion Peres Jepchirchir, world record holder Ruth Chepng’etch, Tigst Assefa, the second fastest woman in history, 2021 champion Joyciline Jepkosgei and Valencia Marathon champion Alemu Megertu, who finished third and fourth respectively in London this year.
