Youngster Emmanuel Wanyonyi has explained how his debut at the World Championships last year taught him what it takes to win on such a big stage.

World 800m silver medallist Emmanuel Wanyonyi has shared how his debut in the senior category at the World Championships was an eye-opener for him.

The 19-year-old made his first appearance at the World Championships during last year’s edition of the global event in Oregon, USA.

He missed out on the podium place narrowly after finishing fourth in the race. The race was taken by his compatriot, Emmanuel Korir, who clocked 1:43.71 to win the race. Wanyonyi explained that the experience there taught him what it takes to win on such a big stage.

“It was my first time out there with no experience at all. It dawned on me that everyone competing at the championships is not a pushover and you have to put your best foot forward every time. Everyone wants to win,” Wanyonyi said as per Sports Brief.

Wanyonyi took into practice what he learnt and he has noticed a great improvement in his performance this season.

He has been to several Diamond League Meetings and he even won the Diamond League Trophy at the Prefontaine Classic.

At the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, he went ahead to finish second in the men’s 800m final race.

However, he wanted to clinch the gold medal in the global showpiece. He had discussed with his coach the strategy they would use but things did not go as planned.

They had mastered Marco Arop’s style of running but the Canadian also changed his strategy and that’s how he carried the day at the event.

“We had agreed to let Marco Arop dominate the race going into the second lap. Then, with the last 200m or 100m, I will pass him and be the world champion.

Arop decided to hang back and was in the last position as we crossed the first 400m. This threw me off my game as I had expected him to set the pace. I kept waiting for him to surge forward but he didn’t come until the latter stages,” he said.
