The athletes are set to go into a residential training camp starting Tuesday, April 11.
Athletics Kenya Nairobi Region chairman Barnaba Korir is plotting big for the juniors ahead of the Africa under 18/20 championships scheduled for April 29 to May 3 in Lusaka, Zambia.
Korir revealed that they want to ensure they send a strong team to defend the under-18 title and this time around, take top honours in the under-20 title. The first edition of the championship was held in 2019 in Ivory Coast where Kenya finished second overall behind South Africa in the under-20 category and won the U18 title at the same championships.
In order to accomplish the target, Korir said the juniors will be sent to a residential training camp starting Tuesday, April 11 until April 27.
“We have very good performance in some areas but there are others that need to be carefully looked into. We want to take a team that is going to do very well. They have to go for residential training where they will undergo intensive training,” Korir said.

The championships are scheduled for later this month in Lusaka, Zambia.
The team of 50 was selected on Saturday, April 8 and Korir is confident that they will perform well and raise the country’s flag high.
Due to the tough competition that awaits them in Lusaka, Korir revealed that they will give wild cards to the athletes who show potential. He said they are bound to face opposition from countries like Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and South Africa who are forces to reckon with when it comes to field events and sprints.
“We shall give some athletes wild cards because we want a strong team. We also want to add athletes who have competed at the international level and have gained some experience. We do not want to be caught off guard,” he said.
He added that their main focus at the moment is on the sprints and field events. “We want to support the interests of those athletes who participate in the sprints and field events. Going forward, we wank Kenya to be known as a powerhouse in the two,” he said.
