Former Olympics champion Athing Mu has decided to start her 2025 season with a longer distance after signing up for her first race in nine months.

Former Olympics champion Athing Mu seems to be ready to rumble after announcing her first race of the 2025 season.

Mu has not raced since her painful experience at the US Olympics trials in June 2024, when she was on her way to winning the 800m, but fell and missed out on a ticket to the Paris Games with a subsequent appeal not successful.

That left her in tears as she was not able to defend her Olympics title and after healing from the experience, Mu has since gotten married and is now ready to go again.

The 22-year-old has signed up for the 65th annual Mt SAC Relays set to take place at the Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, California with the former 800m champion set to run in a longer distance.

Mu has decided to start her season with the 5,000m race, which will be ran on Friday, April 18, a surprising choice given her specialty is 800m.

The Los Angeles-based runner, who is coached by Bobby Kersee, seems keen to use the 5,000m to tune up for the 800m as she looks to return to winning ways this after previously dominating her event.

After winning the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Mu claimed the world title at the 2022 World Championships before a bronze a year later, all in 800m, and she will be looking for another place on the podium at the 2025 Worlds in Tokyo after her painful 2024 that was also blighted by injuries.
