Agnes Jebet Ngetich put up a good fight to claim the top prize and completely obliterate the 10km world record at the 10K Valencia on Sunday

The streets of Valencia on Sunday witnessed fireworks as the women’s world record went down in the 10km race.

The women’s race saw more than 10 women gather for the 10K Valencia Ibercaja with Agnes Jebet Ngetich lining up as a pre-race favourite. Ngetich had already made it clear that she was going for Yalemzerf Yeahualaw’s world record.

The race started in high momentum and the athletes were not stopping at anything. Ngetich and Emmaculate Anyango stuck together throughout the race with the former looking very comfortable to go for the top prize.

She kept gazing at her watch throughout the race and covering 5km, Ngetich had only one opponent to be worried about, compatriot Anyango who held onto her.

After the 22nd minute, Ngetich dropped Anyango and was now running alone with the aid of pacemakers who were doing a good job propelling her to world record glory.

With the finish line in sight, Ngetich was sprinting to the finish line and she managed to successfully obliterate the Ethiopian's world record. The Kenyan clocked 28:46 to finish first ahead of Anyango who clocked 28:57.

Meanwhile, the men’s race was also a one-man show with Jacob Kiplimo being in a class of his own. He stayed with the leading pack until after covering more than 5km when the Ugandan decided it was time to let go.

At this point, the reigning World Cross-country champion was sprinting and nothing could stop him for taking the top prize.

Kiplimo covered th remaining distance running alone without the help of pace makers. The Ugandan then went ahead and clocked 26:53 to cut the tape ahead of Birhanu Balew who finished second in 26:59.
