With the likes of Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Nigeria tipped to win AFCON 2025, a former Arsenal and France great feels South Africa could shock everyone.

While the likes of Morocco, holders Ivory Coast, Senegal and Nigeria have been termed as favourites to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a France legend feels South Africa could shock all.

The AFCON 2025 kicks off in Morocco on December 21 and will run up to January 18 with the host nation tipped to end their 49-year wait for the title given they will be playing at home and have some of the world’s best players.

There are also the likes of 2021 champions Senegal, Nigeria, champions Ivory Coast and even record seven-time winners Egypt who are considered among the top teams to lift Africa’s biggest football prize.

Petit On What Makes Morocco Special

However, while he acknowledges that the strengths and home advantage of Morocco makes the Atlas Lions a hard to beat, former France and Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit thinks South Africa have the capability of going all the way and winning the trophy.

"Who are my favourites to win the Africa Cup of Nations? I would have to say Morocco because of the players they have, and they are playing at home. In Morocco, we have seen some social troubles in the streets two months ago. The fight was not far away,” Petit told Snabbare.

"We know that football can be very powerful in society to calm down the young generation. The African Player of the Year was Achraf Hakimi. The whole competition would be in Morocco. We all know the money and the expectation from the King of Morocco.”

The 1998 World Cup winner thinks Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana have shown in recent months that they are a force that cannot be ignored.

France Legend Tips Bafana to Surprise

The Bafana Bafana of South Africa defeated the Amavubi of Rwanda 3-0 to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

"That being said, you can't rule out South Africa either after qualifying for the World Cup. Bafana Bafana are underdogs to go all the way at the Africa Cup of Nations,” said Petit, who won the 1997-98 Premier League crown with Arsenal.

South Africa have surprised in the last two years as a team made up of players plying their trade in their local league finished third at AFCON 2023, before a flawless qualification journey for the 2025 tournament, and put the icing on the cake by qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, a first one since 2002.

Veteran Belgian tactician Hugo Broos has built a strong team that is hard to beat, instilling discipline and belief in the side, and they head to AFCON 2025 as the country with the most local players with 17 of the 25 selected for the tournament playing in the Premier Soccer League.

South Africa are in Group B alongside Egypt, Angola and Zimbabwe.
