Zamalek coach Ahmed Abdel-Raouf has responded to claims that his job will be on the line when they face Kaizer Chiefs in the CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday.

The stakes could not be higher for the White Knights as they prepare to step onto the turf at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, aiming to silence critics and cement their standing in Group B.

The Egyptian giants landed in Johannesburg earlier this week, carrying the momentum of a slender 1-0 victory over ZESCO United in their campaign opener.

However, for Kenyan football enthusiasts, the fixture holds a distinct allure. All eyes from Nairobi will be cast toward the Zamalek bench—and hopefully the starting XI—as Kenyan talent Baron Ochieng looks to aid the Cairo giants in their continental pursuit.

Ochieng, part of the traveling contingent, finds himself in the middle of a turbulent period for the club, despite their winning start in Africa.

Things have not been smooth sailing on the domestic scene, where Zamalek currently sit fourth in the Egyptian Premier League. The pressure has been compounded by a painful loss to arch-rivals Al Ahly in the Super Cup final earlier this month, leading to intense speculation regarding Abdel-Raouf's longevity as the caretaker manager.

“Talking about our future in the competition based on tomorrow’s result is premature," the coach told the media, as per Pan Africa Football.

"We still have two matches against Al Masry. Every match I manage at Zamalek matters to my personal history with the club. I don’t think about my future—any success I achieve is for Zamalek first.”

Abdel-Raouf, who took the reins after the dismissal of Belgian manager Yannick Ferreira, has overseen three games, securing two wins but falling short in the Super Cup. While the victory against ZESCO secured three points, the performance left fans and pundits questioning the team's efficiency in front of goal.

Critics Circle Over Caretaker Boss

Despite the interim coach’s defiance, voices from the Egyptian football fraternity have been vocal about the club’s direction.

Former Al Ahly star Islam El Shater recently questioned the merit of keeping Abdel-Raouf at the helm permanently, suggesting the club’s stature requires a more proven quantity.

According to Ysscores.com, Al-Shater said on the channel, MBC Masr 1:

"Is Ahmed Abdelraouf present because of his relationship with sports director John Edward?"

"He is a good technical director, but Zamalek's value is greater than Ahmed Abdelraouf, because the opposite has not been proven.

"Ahmed Abdelraouf lost the Super Cup. He might be a 'good coach', but the value of Zamalek is greater than Ahmed Abdelraouf," he went on.

Depleted Squad Offers Opportunities

The Cairo-based club enters the encounter with an increasingly depleted squad. They are missing an influential midfield trio: Abdallah El-Said, Nabil 'Dunga' Emad, and Ahmed Rabie.

The absence of key midfielders could force Abdel-Raouf to shuffle his pack, potentially handing the Kenyan utility player a significant role in stabilizing the team against a desperate Kaizer Chiefs side.

“After the Super Cup, we faced several challenges. Against Zesco, we created many chances but lacked efficiency. Still, the important thing was securing the win and the three points.”

The coach remains optimistic that the squad depth—including talents like Ochieng—will be sufficient to handle the heat in South Africa.

"The absence of Abdallah El-Said and Nabil Emad affects the team, but Zamalek have high-quality players of the same caliber, and the current squad is capable of compensating for any absences," Abdel-Raouf told reporters on Friday.

"We are facing many challenges, particularly following the local Super Cup. Against ZESCO, we failed to convert our opportunities efficiently and won by just one goal. We made some errors that we are working to correct, but the priority was securing the three points," he added.

The five-time CAF Champions League winners prepare for the 16:00 kick-off where  they face a Kaizer Chiefs side hungry for redemption after falling 2-1 to Al Masry.
