Zak Vyner Missing as Wrexham Suffer Massive Premier League Promotion Blow
Harambee Stars prospect Zak Vyner was missing from the squad as Premier League hopefuls Wrexham suffered in their quest for promotion following a 2-0 loss to Birmingham City on Sunday.
Birmingham secured the vital 2-0 win at St Andrew's, snapping a three-game losing streak and dealing a significant blow to the visitors' Championship playoff ambitions.
Goals from Carlos Vicente and Christoph Klarer, both originating from corners, proved decisive for the home side. The victory lifts Birmingham to 15th in the table, providing much-needed relief after a difficult run of form.
Despite the high-profile celebrity ownership associated with both clubs, neither Birmingham's minority owner Tom Brady nor Wrexham's Hollywood backers Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were in attendance.
The hosts were dominant throughout, registering all eight of the match's shots on target. Their pressure paid off just three minutes into the second half when Vicente connected with Kai Wagner's corner, heading the ball past goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo to open the scoring.
Birmingham sealed the three points 19 minutes from time. Captain Klarer found himself in the right place at the far post to turn in a corner from half-time substitute Paik Seung-Ho, doubling the lead and putting the game beyond Wrexham's reach.
Wrexham's Playoff Hopes Fade
The defeat leaves Phil Parkinson's side four points adrift of Hull City, who currently hold the final playoff spot. Wrexham's inconsistent form has been a persistent issue, with the team failing to win consecutive league matches since February.
History was not on the visitors' side, as they have not managed a victory against Birmingham since their first league encounter back in October 1979. This result extends a winless streak against the Blues that now includes four losses and three draws.
Vyner was conspicuously missing despite high hopes that he could play, having missed Tuesday’s 5-1 loss to Southampton. The Kenyan prospect had started five straight matches, playing in midfield, before dropping to the bench against Southampton but he was omitted completely on Sunday.
Wrexham will look to bounce back when they host Stoke City, followed by an away trip to face relegation-threatened Oxford United.
