Zak Vyner Continues Midfield Role as Wrexham Boost Premier League Promotion Hopes
Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner played 69 minutes for Premier League-chasing Wrexham as they fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 away to West Brom on Friday.
Vyner, who has been enjoying a good run at the English Championship club started his sixth straight match at the Hawthorns for the promotion hopefuls and just like it has been, he played in midfield.
The 28-year-old English-born defender anchored the midfield for Wrexham but it was not a good start as his partner George Dobson scored an own goal after 26 minutes before West Brom netted the second in controversial fashion.
The Red Dragons received a setback when Manchester City loanee Issa Kabore was judged to have fouled Jayson Molumby in the box, allowing Josh Maja to take the Baggies' lead to 2-0. That penalty was highly contested by Wrexham with manager Phil Parkinson expressing his disappointment after the match.
Wrexham Respond to Salvage a Point
However, Parkinson’s men responded immediately after the break when Josh Windass grabbed one in the 47th minute for 2-1 and Dobson then atoned for his earlier mistake when he scored the equaliser in the 62nd minute.
Vyner had a rating of 6.3 after winning one tackle, one aerial battle and managing a pass success rate of 58% in midfield for the Red Dragons.
The Kenyan prospect, a defender by trade, has been enjoying the fruits of his versatility since moving to Wrexham from Bristol City in January with his ability to play in midfield coming in handy for Parkinson.
The draw left Wrexham in sixth place on the Championship table and with six games still to go, they will hope to stay there as it is the final position for the Premier League promotion playoff.
It is a tight race as Wrexham are on 64 points, just one more than Southampton, with Derby County four points behind in eighth place and also habouring playoff ambitions.
