Yves Bissouma: How Fresh Nitrous Oxide Claims Have Put Midfielder’s Future In Doubt
Tottenham say they are looking into claims that midfielder Yves Bissouma was filmed inhaling nitrous oxide.
The Premier League club has launched a fresh investigation following reports from The Sun which allegedly show the 29-year-old Mali international using the substance, commonly known as laughing gas or NOS, for the second time in two seasons.
The footage, reportedly taken in November, has cast a dark shadow over the midfielder's already uncertain future in North London.
Under the government's anti-social behaviour action plan, the substance was made a Class C drug, and offenders can face up to two years in prison for possession, raising the stakes significantly beyond mere sporting sanctions.
To compound matters for the £30m signing, this is the second time he has been embroiled in such a controversy.
At the start of the 2024-25 campaign, former Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou handed Bissouma a one-match ban after he was pictured inhaling the gas.
At the time, the player publicly apologised, admitting to a "severe lack of judgement," but these new allegations suggest a troubling pattern of behaviour.
"We are looking into the events and it will be dealt with as an internal matter," a club spokesperson told BBC Sport.
Bissouma is already on the fringes of the squad, having not played a single minute under Thomas Frank since the manager’s appointment in June.
His absence has been largely attributed to a string of fitness setbacks; he is currently sidelined after undergoing ankle surgery in October and has also struggled with knee injuries earlier in the campaign.
A History Of Disciplinary Issues
The midfielder’s relationship with the new technical bench was already strained before the "hippy crack" allegations resurfaced.
Bissouma was notably dropped from the squad for the Uefa Super Cup game against Paris St-Germain in August, a decision the club attributed to persistent lateness.
He has not featured in a competitive match since May 25, when he played against his former club Brighton, shortly after starting in the club's Europa League triumph over Manchester United in Bilbao.
Social Media Hints At Exit
In a telling development that has fueled speculation about a permanent exit, the 29-year-old has deleted all references to Tottenham on his official Instagram account.
Between the lack of playing time under Thomas Frank, the recurring injuries, and now a second investigation into illegal substance use, Bissouma faces a potential disciplinary wrath that could prematurely end his career at Tottenham Hotspur.
