You cannot drop him — Alan Shearer pleads with Southgate to keep faith with England star
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has come out in strong support of England captain Harry Kane, urging manager Gareth Southgate to resist the temptation of dropping him for the crucial Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands.
While Kane has faced criticism for his underwhelming performances in the tournament so far, Shearer believes it's unfair to single him out when most of the England players have been subpar.
Should Southgate drop Harry Kane?
Kane, who has scored just two goals in the tournament, has been the subject of intense scrutiny, with many questioning his ability to lead the team's attack.
However, Shearer points out that the England captain is not solely responsible for the team's struggles.
“There is no doubt in my mind [that he should start],” Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast.
“There is no way you can leave him out, you can’t leave your captain out and your record goalscorer, the guy who can produce something special.”
England will once again look to Kane for firepower against the Netherlands on Wednesday 8 pm WAT.
