World Cup blow for Harambee Stars as Ivory Coast tighten grip with Gambia win

Kenya’s dream of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has suffered yet another setback, just days after their painful 2-1 loss to Gabon.

Harambee Stars' hopes have taken a further hit following Ivory Coast’s 1-0 victory over Gambia in their Group F qualifier on Monday, March 24.

Sebastian Haller’s lone goal in Abidjan secured all three points for the Ivorians, propelling them to the top of the group standings with 16 points.

Gabon follows closely in second place with 15 points, leaving Kenya, currently fourth with just six points, with a steep mountain to climb.

While Harambee Stars are still mathematically in contention, their chances of securing a World Cup spot are now extremely slim.

With four matches left to play against Gambia, Seychelles, Burundi, and Ivory Coast, Kenya would need an extraordinary run of victories, along with favorable results from other teams, to revive their hopes.

Despite the grim outlook, Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy remains optimistic about his team’s ability to improve.

Speaking after the Gabon defeat, McCarthy acknowledged the disappointment but assured fans of better performances in the coming fixtures.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t give the fans that joy or something to celebrate. But what we can promise is that we will improve, we will get better, and they will have a team they can be proud of," McCarthy said.

However, even a perfect run in their remaining games may not be enough to alter their fate.

Harambee Stars must now focus on regaining confidence and collecting maximum points, hoping for a strong finish in Group F.
