Why I Sacrificed Chukwueze - AC Milan boss explains idea behind Super Eagles star's struggles
Despite a positive run of form in recent weeks, Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze's quest for a more consistent run in the AC Milan starting team remains bleak, as revealed by manager Stefano Pioli.
Chukwueze, who joined the Rossoneri from Villarreal in the summer, has struggled to cement a regular place in Pioli's starting XI, with the 24-year-old being limited to cameo appearances off the bench.
Milan boss on Chukwueze
This trend continued in Milan's recent goalless draw against Juventus, where Chukwueze was afforded just seven minutes of playing time after coming on as a substitute.
Addressing the situation, Pioli provided an interesting explanation for his decision to leave the Nigerian on the bench.
"I preferred Pulisic instead,” he stated per Milan-based Sempre Milan. “Chukwueze is also doing well but at the moment, I won't give up an extra midfielder to play with four attacking players and therefore, Chukwu is the one who was sacrificed."
The comments from the Milan boss suggest that Chukwueze's versatility and ability to play in multiple attacking positions has not been enough to secure him a regular starting berth, with Pioli seemingly preferring a more balanced midfield approach.
This latest setback will be a disappointment for Chukwueze, who would have been hoping to build on his positive performances in recent weeks and cement his place in the Milan lineup.
With the Serie A season approaching its climax, the Nigerian international will remain keen to seize any opportunities that come his way and prove to Pioli that he deserves a more prominent role in the team's plans.
