Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United is shrouded in uncertainty as the Swedish striker continues to defy club orders by refusing to return to training.

The 25-year-old has made it clear he no longer wishes to play under Eddie Howe and is instead focused on engineering a move to Liverpool.

His stance means he will be absent from the Magpies’ squad for their Premier League opener against Aston Villa—a decision that could cost him dearly.

Reports in the English media suggest Newcastle are prepared to fine Isak around £280,000, the equivalent of two weeks’ wages, for his refusal to take part in the club’s training program.

Howe, who has been in direct contact with the striker, admitted to having multiple discussions about his intentions but insists the details must remain private.

“I’ve told him repeatedly that I want him training and playing,” Howe said. “We’ve had discussions, but for now, my focus is on preparing the team for Aston Villa.”

Isak’s determination to join Liverpool comes after the Reds saw their initial £120 million offer rejected. The Swedish international has since opted to train independently, a move widely interpreted as an attempt to force Newcastle’s hand.

Despite his absence, Howe had still hoped to include him for the Villa Park fixture, given the club’s lack of a recognised striker.

“This hasn’t stopped me from asking him to feature,” Howe admitted. “But the reality is, we also need to look at the bigger picture.”

With Isak’s situation unresolved, Newcastle are actively searching for a replacement. However, Howe concedes the options are limited.

“We are looking to bring in a striker, the best we can find. But the market is challenging. Regardless of Isak’s situation, we need to strengthen up front,” he explained.

The timing of the standoff is particularly problematic for Newcastle, who are eager to build on last season’s progress and challenge for a top-four finish. Losing their star forward without a suitable replacement could derail those ambitions.

For Isak, the gamble is clear: force through his dream move to Liverpool, or risk fines, strained relationships, and an uncertain role at Newcastle. For the club, it’s a test of resolve in holding firm to their valuation while maintaining squad harmony.

Whether this ends with a record-breaking transfer or a reluctant reconciliation, the next few weeks could define both Isak’s career trajectory and Newcastle’s season.
