Wakiso Giants and UPL Match Day One blues
By falling 3-0 to Maroons FC at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium on Sunday, Wakiso Giants FC were losing their third-straight opener in the Startimes Uganda Premier League.
Darius Ojok scored a brace, while Abraham Tusubira added one as the Prison Warders defeated the Purple Sharks in front of their home crowd in Wakiso.
The defeat marks yet another new campaign that has started with no positive result for the Wakiso-based side since gaining promotion to the top flight in 2019.
A 1-0 loss to KCCA FC welcomed Wakiso into the top division in the 2019/20 season at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
Allan Okello scored the decisive goal on the day as Wakiso competed well but failed to find a goal.
A goalless draw with Police FC followed in their second season, the result also coming at Lugogo, where the Kops hosted their league matches.
A home clash with KCCA opened the 2021/22 season for the Purple Sharks, and the Kasasiro Boys ran over them 3-0 in a one-sided affair.
Sadat Anaku, Davis Kasirye and Ashraf Mugume scored for KCCA as they ran riot in Wakiso.
Mugume’s brace and Geoffrey Wasswa’s header won it 3-2 for KCCA to start the 2022/23 season at Lugogo. Ibrahim Kasule and Tom Matsiko scored for Wakiso on the day.
With KCCA responsible for most of the defeats, Maroons joined the party with that thrilling 3-0 win on Sunday.
The Purple Sharks have yet to register a win in their first fixture of the season but have always gone on to be competitive later on in the season.
Soltilo Bright Stars will be Wakiso’s next challenge, and John Luyinda and his charges will be looking to correct what went wrong the last time out.
