A total of six goals were scored in the final two matches at the knockout stage of the U17 AFCON on Thursday in Algeria.
This represents an average of three goals per game as Nigeria and Congo crashed out of the competition with painful defeats.
Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets suffered a shock defeat to Burkina Faso in the last kick off while Congo was no match for Mali in the first game of the day.
With the results, Nigeria and Congo will not be heading to the FIFA U17 World Cup slated for later this year.
Africa’s FIFA U17 World Cup reps
Following their victories in the quarterfinals, the four nations that made it through to the AFCON semifinals will represent Africa at the global showpiece.
Morocco, Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal are the quartets that will look to make the continent proud at the FIFA tournament.
Morocco
The Moroccans defeated host Algeria 3-0 to seal their ticket to the global event.
It’s the second time Morocco will make it to the FIFA U17 World Cup after their debut in 2013 when they made it to the round of 16.
Mali
The junior Eagles will be Africa’s most experienced team at the competition in the absence of Nigeria.
Mali defeated Congo 3-0 to book their sixth ticket to the World Cup, where they have made it to the final of the 2015 edition, losing to Nigeria.
Burkina Faso
The Junior Stallions are set for a return to the World Cup after their last appearance in 2011.
This will be the fourth appearance for Burkina Faso, with their best performance a third place finish in the 2001 edition.
Senegal
The favourites for the title had an easy ride to the semifinals after they thrashed South Africa 5-0 in the quarterfinal.
It’s their second appearance at the FIFA U17 World Cup, with their debut in the 2019 when they crashed out in the round of 16.
The 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup, the 19th edition of the tournament, will be hosted by Peru from November 10 to December 2.
