According to The Athletic, Deco and manager Hansi Flick see the 28-year-old as the key to bolstering their attacking line. The Catalan club has taken concrete steps, formally contacting Liverpool on Wednesday to inquire about Diaz’s availability.

However, Liverpool swiftly rebuffed the approach, making it clear that Diaz is not for sale and remains integral to new manager Arne Slot’s plans for the upcoming season.Diaz has also drawn attention from elsewhere, with Al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia and Manchester City previously expressing interest.

The Athletic notes that Al-Hilal’s recent €95m pursuit of Bruno Fernandes has helped establish a market value for Diaz. Despite Barcelona’s optimism, a potential sticking point lies in Diaz’s contract, which has just two years remaining.

Talks over a new deal have stalled, and The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports that Liverpool are prepared to risk losing him as a free agent in 2027 unless an offer changes their stance. In Catalonia, speculation is rife that Diaz is keen to join Barcelona and believes his time at Liverpool has run its course.

Deco has publicly admitted his admiration for the winger, and Barcelona reportedly believe they can secure a deal for around €70m. For now, though, Liverpool’s firm stance leaves little room for negotiation.
