‘There was a mistake’ - Atalanta manager admits to error in Lookman's substitution
Lazio defeated Atalanta 1-0 in a Serie A match at Bergamo's Gewiss Stadium on Sunday, denting their chances of winning the Serie A.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru created the assist for his team-winning goal that put Lookman’s team to the sword.
However, it was the Super Eagles' forward substitution that caught everyone off guard in the 74th minute.
Gasperini explains Lookman’s substitution
The manager’s decision to substitute Lookman visibly angered the player, who left the field and sat on the bench, irritated and frustrated..
Gian Piero Gasperini explained after the match that he had intended to substitute Ederson, not Lookman.
"Yes, there was a mistake. I said Ede, they understood Ade," he told DAZN, according to Calciomercato.
The manager confirmed that the substitution was an error due to a misunderstanding. It was Ederson ("Ede"), not Lookman ("Ade"), who was meant to be substituted.
Lookman failed to score in three straight Serie A matches, including the game against Lazio, marking the third time this season he's experienced such a goal drought.
