Thank God we didn't sign him — Chelsea fans celebrate after Folarin Balogun missed two penalties for Monaco
USMNT international Folarin Balogun missed from the penalty spot twice in Monaco’s 1-0 defeat to Nice and it has had Chelsea fans thanking their stars.
The 22-year-old completed a move to Rouges et Blancs from Arsenal this summer after an exceptional campaign with Lens last season, where he scored 22 goals. Before his return to Ligue 1, however, the player was heavily linked with the Blues, but a deal did not happen.
Balogun wasteful
The Arsenal academy graduate lost the battle of nerves twice to the former Chelsea youth team goalkeeper Marcin Bulka.
In a stiffly contested game, Balogun was presented with the chance to fire his team ahead from 18 yards in the 12th minute of the match, but the striker had his shot saved by Bulka.
The heroic Polish shot-stopper was on hand to prevent Folarin the second time in the 55th minute, as Marcin guessed correctly, diving to his left to save another penalty.
Another former Chelsea youth player, Jeremy Boga punished Balogun’s earlier profligacy, firing in the 91st minute to snatch maximum points for Nice late in the game.
Chelsea fans react to Balogun’s misses
Fans of the West London team, who themselves have been plagued by forward players misfiring this season, reacted to Balogun’s misses against Nice with a relieved tone, as according to reports, Chelsea were close to landing the former England u-21 striker.
"Thank God Chelsea did not sign him,” a fan said, per the Daily Star. Another went, "Need to find the person who linked Folarin Balogun to Chelsea before the transfer window closed.”
A third fan was quoted saying, "Chelsea dodged a bullet...Balogun misses two penalties for Monaco in a single match."
