During a recent inspection tour, Victor Seff, Chief Executive of the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), confirmed that work has already begun on the Essuri road section.

This initial phase is part of a broader strategy to ensure all necessary infrastructure is in place well before the continental football tournament.

Seff acknowledged that while some sections are advancing smoothly, others are awaiting the finalisation of compensation for residents whose properties are affected. He emphasised that discussions are ongoing to prevent any potential delays.

"The government's objective is to have these roads finished by May 2027, ensuring they are ready for use before AFCON kicks off," Seff stated as per Daily News.

He added that the project is being implemented using a 'Design and Build' model to expedite delivery, with all procurement processes already completed.

The project is being carried out by China Railway Construction Engineering Group. Work has started on the 2.45-kilometre Essuri road, which includes a new 100-metre bridge.

Future phases will include the 2.75-kilometre Lendita road, set to become a four-lane highway, and the 6.5-kilometre Mateves road, which will feature both two-lane and four-lane segments.

Seff also highlighted the project's economic benefits, noting it will create significant employment opportunities for local communities and urged young people to take advantage of the new jobs.

Idephonce Karol, a consultant engineer from Afrisa Construction Engineering Group, reported that preliminary activities such as surveys, soil testing, and site clearance are progressing well.

He confirmed that teams have been working around the clock since the project's official start on April 1, 2026, to meet the ambitious deadline.
