Liverpool’s reputation for last-gasp drama grew even stronger at Turf Moor as Mohamed Salah’s 95th-minute penalty sealed a 1-0 victory over Burnley.

The win keeps the Reds top of the Premier League and sets a new record for late winners.

Salah delivers again in dramatic finish

Burnley, unbeaten at home since May 2024, made life incredibly difficult for Jurgen Klopp’s men. Jaidon Anthony’s pace on the counter had the home fans believing in a shock, while Martin Dúbravka dealt comfortably with Liverpool’s tame first-half efforts from Salah and Hugo Ekitike.

The hosts’ frustration with referee Michael Oliver boiled over after Alexis Mac Allister was allowed to play on during a long stoppage, and Milos Kerkez saw yellow for simulation before limping off before the break.

In the second half, Liverpool increased the tempo, with Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz, and Dominik Szoboszlai all threatening, while substitutes Conor Bradley and Andy Robertson almost carved open Burnley’s defence.

Yet, with Lesley Ugochukwu dismissed late on, the game was heading for a stalemate until Hannibal Mejbri’s handball gifted Salah the decisive chance. The Egyptian converted with trademark composure, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling support.

Liverpool rewrite Premier League history

While Salah’s cool penalty secured three vital points, the Egyptian legend’s goal also carried historic weight.

It marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive league win to start the season, only the third time the club has ever achieved such a feat.

More remarkably, the Reds became the first team in Premier League history to win four successive matches thanks to goals scored in the final 10 minutes or later.

Salah himself has now been directly involved in six of Liverpool’s last nine stoppage-time winners, though this was his first time scoring one outright.

For Burnley, it was a cruel end to a resilient display, leaving them with a third defeat in four. But for Liverpool, the label of “stoppage time kings” has never rung truer.
