Burnley vs Liverpool: Ugochukwu sent off as late penalty rescues Reds at Turf Moor
Despite playing with 10 men following Lesley Ugochukwu's late red card, Burnley almost pulled off an upset against Liverpool, falling to a late penalty.
Mohamed Salah was on hand to convert from the spot to keep Liverpool at the summit of the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Burnley.
Burnley vs Liverpool: How it happened
Burnley, unbeaten at home since May 2024, proved difficult to break down, with Jaidon Anthony offering early threat for the home side on the counter.
The home crowd voiced their anger when referee Michael Oliver allowed Alexis Mac Allister to play on after a long stoppage, and tempers flared further when Milos Kerkez was booked for an exaggerated dive before being substituted before half-time.
Liverpool’s first-half attacking efforts, including shots from Salah and Hugo Ekitike, barely tested Martin Dúbravka.
The second half saw the visitors raise their tempo, with Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai all going close, while substitutes Conor Bradley and Andrew Robertson nearly combined for the opener.
Burnley’s defence, however, stood firm until Hannibal Mejbri’s late handball gifted Liverpool a decisive penalty.
Salah calmly converted to send the travelling supporters wild, leaving Burnley with a third defeat in four matches and Liverpool three points clear at the top.
For Liverpool, the victory marks only the third time the Reds have opened a campaign with four straight wins.
