Richard Odada Breaks Silence on Missed Penalty While Backing Harambee Stars' AFCON 2027 Plan
Harambee Stars midfielder Richard Odada has broken his silence since his missed penalty during their FIFA Series match against Estonia.
At the same time, Richard Odada also endorsed Harambee Stars’ long-term strategy for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, highlighting the current high-intensity preparations as crucial for a competitive showing when Kenya co-hosts the tournament.
Kenya, along with Uganda and Tanzania, will host the continental showpiece from June 19 to July 18. Head coach Benni McCarthy has set a firm objective of advancing past the group stage, a target Richard Odada believes is achievable with sustained effort.
"The coach has made it clear what is expected from us," Richard Odada stated as quoted by The Star. "We are not going there just to participate; we are going there to compete."
A core part of this strategy involves integrating new talent. "Competition in the squad is healthy," Odada noted. "It pushes everyone to raise their level and fight for their place."
The squad is also set to be bolstered by players with Kenyan heritage from European leagues, a move expected to increase its depth. "Players coming from different leagues bring different qualities," he added. "It helps us grow tactically as a team."
Richard Odada Speaks Out on Missed Penalty Against Estonia
The recent FIFA Series in Kigali served as a practical test for the evolving squad. Kenya drew 1-1 with Estonia before losing on penalties, but bounced back with a convincing 3-0 victory over Grenada. Richard Odada described the performance as a positive step.
"In the Estonia game, we controlled possession but didn’t manage key moments well," Richard Odada reflected. "Those are the situations we have to improve on."
The midfielder acknowledged his missed penalty in the shootout was a personal disappointment, but he has used it as a learning experience. "You always want to contribute positively in those situations," he said. "But when things don’t go your way, you learn and move on."
The team's strong response against Grenada, however, demonstrated their growing resilience. "The reaction in the second match was very important," Odada explained. "It showed that we can adjust and improve within a short period."
Richard Odada: Club Form and Career Path
Away from international duty, Richard Odada has found stability at the club level with UTA Arad in Romania's top-flight Liga 1, where he has become a regular starter since his arrival in September 2025.
The Kenyan international has made 16 appearances across all competitions, primarily tasked with shielding the defence and disrupting opposition play.
His combative style has resulted in three yellow cards and one red card. After serving a suspension, he returned as a substitute in a 5-1 win over Metaloglobus Bucharest on April 5.
"The move to Romania has helped me find consistency again," Richard Odada said. "Playing regularly gives you confidence and rhythm." He added, "It was frustrating at first because I had to wait before playing. But I stayed patient and kept working, and when the chance came, I was ready."
