Manchester City began their Premier League title defence in emphatic fashion with a 4–0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Pep Guardiola admitted afterwards that his biggest worry lies not on the pitch, but in the size of his squad.

Erling Haaland scored twice at Molineux to get his season off to a flying start, while summer arrivals Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki both found the net on their league debuts.

What Guardiola said

Despite the dominance, Guardiola struck a cautious note after the match.

He said, “The squad size is not healthy. We have too many players. Some need to leave for the balance to be right. It’s important for the players and for the team.”

City have already been active in the transfer market, but with Ederson and Savinho linked to potential exits, Guardiola hinted that departures may be imminent.

Ederson, the club’s long-time No.1, has reportedly drawn interest from Galatasaray while Savinho who starred on loan at Girona last season, is on the radar of  Tottenham Hotspur.

Guardiola stressed that Ederson remains his first-choice goalkeeper but admitted that the coming weeks could bring changes.

The Catalan coach has frequently spoken about the importance of harmony within his squad, and his latest comments suggest that City will look to trim their numbers before the transfer window closes.
